Modernizing Your Home Exterior with Stone Veneer Siding
Your home's exterior is the first thing people see. If you are looking at plain stucco or tired old siding, stone veneer can completely change how your house looks. We are talking about a dramatic upgrade that makes your home stand out in the neighborhood. Stone veneer installation gives you the beauty of natural stone at a fraction of the cost and weight.
Here is how it works. Stone veneer is real stone that has been cut thin, usually about one to two inches thick. This makes it light enough to install on your existing walls without expensive structural reinforcement. You get the authentic look and texture of stone without the massive weight and expense of full-thickness stone masonry.
We install stone veneer on all kinds of surfaces. Stucco, wood siding, concrete block, even metal buildings. The veneer is attached with mortar and metal ties, creating a durable finish that lasts for decades. You can cover your entire house or just add accent walls around entrances, on columns, or along the foundation. Both approaches look fantastic.
Stone veneer also solves problems. Got stucco cracks that keep coming back? Cover them with stone. Tired of repainting wood siding every few years? Stone never needs painting. Want better insulation? Stone veneer adds thermal mass that helps regulate temperature. Plus, stone is fireproof, which gives you extra protection and may even lower your insurance rates.
Choosing the Perfect Stone Style for Your Home
Natural Stone vs. Manufactured Stone Veneer
You have got two main options for stone veneer: natural and manufactured. Natural stone veneer is exactly what it sounds like. Real stone cut thin. You get authentic colors, textures, and variations because it is actual rock from a quarry. Every piece is unique. Common natural options include limestone, sandstone, slate, and granite.
Manufactured stone veneer, also called cultured stone or faux stone, is made from concrete with pigments and molds. Modern manufacturing has gotten so good that most people cannot tell the difference from 10 feet away. Manufactured stone weighs even less than natural veneer and costs about 30 to 40 percent less. It also comes in more consistent sizes, which can make installation faster.
Popular Stone Veneer Styles
Here are the styles we install most often in Pomona:
- Ledgestone: Horizontal stacked stone with a clean, modern look. Works great on contemporary homes.
- Fieldstone: Rounded, irregular shapes that create a rustic, old-world appearance. Perfect for traditional homes.
- River Rock: Smooth stones in earth tones. Great for accents around water features or foundations.
- Ashlar: Cut stone blocks in various sizes, often in tan or gray. Classic and elegant.
- Dry Stack: Flat stones stacked without visible mortar joints. Creates a crisp, architectural look.
We bring samples to your home so you can see how different stones look against your existing colors and in your actual lighting. This is way better than looking at pictures online. We want you to be absolutely confident in your choice before we start work. Similar to our brick restoration projects, matching your home's style is critical.
How We Install Stone Veneer That Lasts
Proper installation is everything with stone veneer. Done right, it lasts 50 years or more with zero maintenance. Done wrong, it falls off in 5 years. We follow strict industry standards and manufacturer guidelines to ensure your veneer stays put.
First, we prepare your walls. This might mean installing a weather-resistant barrier and metal lath over wood siding, or cleaning and preparing stucco or concrete. The goal is to create a solid base with a good mechanical bond. We also install proper flashing around windows and doors to direct water away from vulnerable areas.
Then we apply a scratch coat of mortar and let it cure. This gives us a rough surface for the stone to grab onto. Next comes the fun part. We carefully select and place each piece of stone, spacing them appropriately and making sure the weight is distributed evenly. We might dry-fit sections first to get the pattern just right.
Finally, we grout the joints if your style requires it. Some dry-stack patterns look best without visible grout. Others need mortar joints for authenticity. We match the mortar color to complement your stone choice. Everything is cleaned, sealed if needed, and left looking perfect.
One critical detail: weep holes and drainage. We make sure water that gets behind the veneer has a way to escape. This prevents moisture buildup that could damage your walls or cause the stone to detach. These details separate professional work from amateur installations. We also coordinate with other masonry work on your home for a cohesive look.
